Pickup

Calves must be picked up no later than six months of age for dam raised calves and six weeks of age for bottle babies or a $15/day charge will be assessed.

Health and Vaccinations

At birth calves will be given Tri-shield First Defense and Inforce 3 .

At weaning calves are vaccinated with Vision 7 and Cattle Master Gold, as well as Bangs vaccinations for heifers. All vaccines will be boosted before calves travel to their forever homes. Calves will have a thorough vet exam prior to traveling and will be sent with health papers.

All calves are tested for BVD and will have horn status and color confirmation testing will be done through UC Davis.

Weaning

Calves are weaned at 4-5 months of age depending on how the calf is maturing.  We use weaning clips for a week to deter calves from nursing, but it allows them to stay with their dam while they make that adjustment. Next they will be fenceline weaned for a week before they are completely separated. This process is extremely low stress for both mama and calf.

Calf Kindergarten

After calves have had a week or so to adjust to being weaned and away from their mamas we start the handling and halter training process. Our calves are handled from day one, so they’re already very well socialized.

-We start by placing a training halter on that will stay in place with the lead rope dragging for several days. This is done in a safe environment free of anything they can get tangled up on.  While the lead rope is dragging, the calf will naturally step on the lead and it teaches them to give to the pressure of the halter pulling on their head.

-After they have had a few days to learn to give to the pressure, we start short tying sessions daily.  While the calves are tied we spend time brushing them and touching them all over to help with desensitization.

-Once the calves have gotten the hang of being tied, we start teaching them to walk on the halter.  Calves will be walked every day for short sessions in the beginning and working up to field trips around our property to let them see the sites and continue with the desensitizing process.

-Other skills calves will be started on include how to move through the chute calmly, bathing, blowing out and lots of socialization.

-Our goal is to send each of our calves off to their new homes fully equipped to  handle the transition to their new family with ease. We pride ourselves on raising good minded, easy to handle animals that can be enjoyed for years to come!
